THE WEEKLY READOUT
THIS WEEK’S BIG EVENT? little people: There’s no need to hide it, our favorite part of last week was substitute teaching primary to the 5 year-olds. Couple highlights:
1) Kid’s say the darndest things: we taught a particularly bright group of children. When the sharing time leader asked who knew what “gratitude” meant, little Grant shot his hand up and replied, “that’s the force that keeps us from flying off into outer space.” Lizzie was quick to correct him: “no, gratitude is a feeling we have, like being sad, or happy…or mad.”
2) During music time, a little girl in the sunbeam class was invited to be the special helper and lead the music. Let’s just say this sunbeam put all of herself into it—if the children weren’t following her waving hand, her impressive hip action would keep them going (think Dirty Dancing). .
3) A star is born: the kids loved Sister Satterthwaite (don’t worry- our first lesson was teaching them how to say our name- they got it). The real crowd pleaser was when KA busted out the blanket she brought from home to illustrate how the Holy Ghost provides us with comfort. She would take each child, wrap them in the blanket, and give them a big hug. Suffice it to say they want Sister Satterthwaite back. . .
Happy Day(s)! KA and I celebrated our one month anniversary on Friday at the Cheesecake Factory with MJ, Megan Woodhouse and Nathan Needham (Meg’s boyfriend). Friday was also Del and Cheryl’s anniversary, and Saturday was Vern’s birthday. That’s quite the week. .
Almost there: our house is coming together. We put together our TV table as well as two additional chairs. We’re really happy with how it has turned out, and feel at home there.
Four chairs means . . . we can now have people over for dinner! On Saturday night we hosted our first dinner guests, Sister Bolersaikhan and Sister Olson (from Mongolia and Wyoming, respectively). KA made the most amazing lasagna, and we enjoyed having the missionaries in our home.
Don’t worry, there’s more: after dinner, we had the change to go to an appointment with an investigator and her friend, who just happened to be a divinity student at American University.
KA was a natural, and bore powerful testimony like an old pro (that mission in Nauvoo really paid off!). Suffice it to say, Clint was excited to teach, and KA is surprised he didn’t dust off his old name tag to wear to the appointment!
In the end, we did learn a powerful lesson. The investigator had been ‘exploring’ the Journal of Discourses from Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and was caught up on what Mormon’s teach about man’s potential to become like God. After a back and forth discussion, a spirit of discord and doubt filled the room as she stated she didn’t think that was right, and furthermore that she didn’t think the Book of Mormon was true. What an incredible contrast we felt as we witnessed young Sister Bolersaikhan, a convert to the church, respond with words of faith and testimony, declaring boldly that she our Father in Heaven loved us, Jesus is the Christ, that Joseph Smith was called as a prophet to restore the church to the earth, and that the Book of Mormon was the word of God. What a powerful example of how God’s work is to be done.
THE REST OF THE WORLD
Japan’s still in trouble, as estimates rise to 18,000 killed. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Not since World War II has the US been fighting on three different fronts. In support of a UN resolution passed last week, US forces struck Libya in an effort to halt the killing of innocent Libyans by Muammar Khadafy. The President maintains the US will shortly pull back its forces and allow its allies to carry out the United Nations-led mission.
JUST FOR FUN:
Skype time: We figured out Skype, and had a great talk with Clint’s family Sunday night, although we do have to wonder what Aleyah and Jayci liked more- talking to Clint and KA, or watching themselves in their own video screen…
The best part is, everyone else loved watching them play in front of the camera, so we’ll take it either way.
