Babies, Clint’s tough luck, cupcake wars, end of shutdown showdown
Good Stuff for moms: Our week started out with moms and their babies. KA’s best friend Ashley and her two friends came down from Philly, each of them packing a baby and a stroller. We took them to Good Stuff Eatery, our favorite burger place on Capitol Hill.
Can’t keep a straight face: Zoe (Ash’s baby) is determined to make everyone smile. She targeted some pretty serious-looking cooks working behind a window at a pizza place nearby. She ginned up toothless smile and threw out some innocent waves of her hand, and it wasn’t long before they had stopped what they were doing and were exchanging smiles and waves with the little charmer. Clint’s convinced it didn’t hurt that a really cute girl was holding the baby (see picture).
Clint gets bombed: Ever heard of that guy that wore a new necktie to work, only to have a bird poop on it? Yeah, it was a black patterned tie, his name is Clint, and it happened Monday.
Still TBD whether the stain will come out.
Love to see the temple: We took time Wednesday to attend the temple in Kensington, Maryland. We love that place! It’s always so peaceful, and this week helped us regain an eternal perspective.
Cupcake wars—Clint and KA style: Saturday afternoon found us in the District with time on our hands, so we zipped over to Georgetown to take the cupcake challenge. To put this in perspective, cupcakes are all the craze right now, and the little specialty shops that make them enjoy a cultish following. No kidding, people will wait in lines that trail down the street just to get the chance to pay a lot of money for a little cupcake. You have to ask—is it worth it? We were determined to find out.
Saturday’s contenders were the seasoned veteran Baked and Wired and the relative newcomer (to DC) Sprinkles. We were lucky to only wait 15 minutes in one line and 20 minutes in another before we bought the goods.
Back home, we thoroughly documented our taste-testing (Clint may have turned out the soundtrack to Rocky Balboa). As it turns out, the winner of the night was Red Velvet from Baked and Wired. There’s just something about cream cheese frosting!
Speaking of primary songs: It happened again—we substitute taught the six year-olds in primary, and couldn’t have been happier. We taught the Word of Wisdom, and KA had the class make brown paper bag puppets of themselves, then pulled different pictures of food out of a bag, inviting them to decide whether they should eat it (flap the mouth open and shut) or refuse it (saw no and hide the puppet behind their backs).
Awkward moment: When a little boy announced that his dad drinks beer.
We suggested he might be referring to root beer as opposed to real beer, but the boy insisted.
Best moment: When the primary president introduced four new members of the primary, one of the girls--a cute little blonde, turned and proudly declared she was a “beach girl.” Awesome.
If I can learn to do it, you can learn to do it: Turns out our class of five year-olds not only remembered us, but called us by name, correctly pronouncing Sat-earth-wait.
The Lord wasn’t kidding when he talked about amazing things coming from the mouths of babes. . .
I was like baby, baby, baby: In addition to great times with Zoe and her friends, we attended a celebratory dinner for CJ Erb- the newest addition to the Jeremy and Jill Erb family. KA found a potentially great use for the train of her dress, and we were able to renew friendships and relive some of the glory days of the Oregon Portland Mission (Clint served with both Jeremy and Jill). Thankfully, no one asked them to sing their mission song, ‘cause Clint probably would have done it.
Told you so: Later that Sunday night, we visited Dan and Lindsay Ricks and their new baby boy, Cooper. Seeing as they just had the baby on Friday, Clint was concerned it was ‘too soon’ to drop by. This prompted the explanation of the family-like relationship that the Henshaws share with Lindsay’s family, a narrative authoritatively confirmed to Clint by Lindsay and her Mom when they finally arrived at their house.
Tender moment: Let it be said that there’s a special spirit to babies. We were overwhelmed by the spirit and feelings of love we felt as we talked with the Rick’s about bringing their baby into the world. MJ and KA both got lost in little Cooper’s eyes as they held the precious newborn in their arms. Mind you, their very clean arms: mom had a bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer nearby, and she was (understandably) strictly enforcing its use.
THE REST OF THE WORLD
Government doesn’t shut down: With only an hour and a half before the government shut down, President Obama and Speaker Boehner reached an agreement to fund the government through the end of September. Seeing as our (only) paycheck right now is coming from the government, the Satterthwaites were happy to see that.
The wedding of the decade: is fast approaching. Now if you ask KA, the wedding of the decade already happened on February 18th, but it has been suggested that Prince William and Kate Middleton is a bigger deal. Whatev. Hold on tight as royal fever sweeps across the globe.
Historic anniversary: Mark your calendar, as tomorrow April 12th, marks the 150th anniversary of the first shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The next four years will include re-enactments and tributes to the conflict that changed our country forever.
JUST FOR FUN
Can’t catch a break: As we rushed out the door for church on Sunday, we grabbed our scriptures, the primary bag, pulled the door closed and…forgot our keys. Our friend Emily Helewell was gracious enough to give us a ride. KA did a nice job of capturing Clint’s reaction—check out the picture below!
Message received: Best quote of the week comes from Clint’s former roommate Kevin Rees, the only one of the four that isn’t engaged or married. Referring to the impact of President Monson’s words to the single men of the church: “Look, I’m either going to get married before the next conference in six months, or I’m not going to the next conference in six months. It’s pretty bad when my 15-year old nephew is elbowing me in the ribs, saying ‘Uncle Kev, the prophet is talking to you!”
Seizing the morning: KA brought her A-game this morning. In the Satterthwaite’s continued effort to start their day off right, KA managed to read her relief society manual, hit the gym with a copy of the Conference Ensign, make hot breakfast for Clint, the bed, go from a nine to a ten, and pack lunch for the next two days.
As for Clint? He’s working on getting better. If there’s an installment of the battle for the morning next week, we’ll know there’s been some progress.
Stay tuned!
Sister you know I LOVE these weekly read outs. Happy nails!
